MENTION resort and most of us automatically think of pools, palm trees, a golden beach and the bright blue cocktail of the day.

How refreshing to find a resort with a commitment to cultural heritage and surrounding ecology.

Such a place is Kewarra Beach Resort, set between rainforest and reef 20 minutes north of Cairns.

Kewarra's lush gardens are sprinkled with more than 20 species of native palms and many of the more unusual species of tree.

Guest cabins are hidden in almost jungle-like foliage, some facing a fish-filled lagoon, occasionally visited by small crocodiles and yellow-circled water goannas.

The gardens at Kewarra are home to more than 90 species of butterflies, including the ulysses with its iridescent blue colouring.

In season, bottle-nosed dolphins and dugongs can be spotted frolicking in Cook Bay adjacent to Kewarra.

Kewarra offers all the expected resort facilities, including a large pool and spa. A croquet lawn features an ornamental pond stocked with freshwater crayfish, and there's tennis plus use of catamarans and windsurfers.

Several times a week, the Suruil Tituil dance troupe performs under the stars. Guests join the torch-lit celebrations with a kup mari meal of spit-roasted pig and fish wrapped in banana leaves and steamed on hot stones buried in the earth.

* Eastwest Airlines has twice-daily services from Sydney to Cairns. A Maxisaver return fare is $409 (14 days advance purchase). Details on 13 17 22. For information on Kewarra Beach Resort, contact your travel agent or phone(070) 57 6666, fax (070) 57 7525.
