Name derivation and history

The Cairns area was discovered by Captain James Cook in 1770, but it was only a hundred years later that its potential as a port was exploited. In 1876, a gold reserve was found west of the region, which demanded a port area to be built. Kewarra Beach, along with the Northern Beaches, developed as the port was transformed into a modern tourist spot.   read more

Geography

Kewarra is on the eastern coast, facing the Pacific Ocean. Like most of northern Queensland, it is prone to tropical cyclones, the most recent of which was Cyclone Larry which struck in 2006.

Attractions

Kewarra Beach offers excellent views of the Pacific and Palm Cove, as well as the Double Islands a short distance away. The Kuranda Skyrail, which takes you over Australia's World Heritage rainforest, was recently voted the Best Major Tourist Attraction in Australia.

Transport

Cairns is a main transport hub in Northern Queensland, with the Bruce Highway directly linking it to Brisbane. The Cairns International Airport is just beside the Northern Beaches and serves daily flights from most major cities. The North Coast Railway Line also connects to Brisbane.

Recreation

Kewarra Beach is a popular site for water sports such as sailing, snorkeling, diving, windsurfing, and jetskiing. Hiking and bushwalking are offered at the many national parks. Kewarra is also home to the Paradise Palms Golf Course, a world-famous facility.

Alternative places

Visitors to Kewarra often make side trips to see the rest of the Northern Beaches. Trinity Beach, Clifton Beach, and Palm Cove are some of the most attractive.
